A Day in the Life of Chester Zoo

Registration is closed for this event

Find out what goes into commercial operations at the UK's most visited zoo, with over 15,000 animals and 500 different species!

Chester Zoo opened its gates in 1931 and was the vision of one man, George Mottershead whose dream was to open a zoo without bars. In 1934 George created the North of England Zoological Society, the conservation charity which still runs Chester Zoo to this day. Today, with over 15,000 animals and 700 staff working in over 125 acres of zoological gardens Chester Zoo is Britain’s most visited attraction outside London, welcoming 1.9 million visitors in 2016 and is the home of Channel 4’s popular documentary series ‘The Secret Life of the Zoo’. Conservation is very much at the heart of everything the zoo does; supporting over 70 conservation projects around the globe, with the commercial operations of the zoo delivering the main source of income to enable the zoo's mission of being a major force in conserving the living world.
